My Story
Growing up, I had always been an extremely active kid. Among other sports, I competed in baseball and volleyball. When I was 12, I began my strength and conditioning training with my volleyball club.
I vividly remember feeling anxious about pushing the weight sled or doing goblet squats because of how hard it was. Yet, I always felt so proud of myself after doing it and realized my mind was more powerful than I thought. At 12 years old, I learned the important lesson that hard work pays off.
When I was 15, it felt amazing to have the necessary strength and conditioning to play in long finals matches in beach volleyball tournaments. It was all thanks to the gruelling work we did in our training.
In high school, I received the Personal Fitness Award in my grade 11 fitness class as well as the Team 12 Fitness Award for my 18U volleyball team. After graduating from high school, my goal was to walk on to my university’s varsity volleyball team. My final summer before starting university, I trained the hardest I ever had before. Max effort squats, weighted sprints, box jumps, you name it.
Finally, the tryouts arrived! However, my life was about to massively change with these six words, “We can’t take you this year.” I was shattered – my whole identity as an elite athlete was gone!
After feeling discouraged and lost for weeks, I finally recovered from the news. I decided that I would continue to train athletically and develop my mental toughness. After all, the lessons I learned in the gym made me into the person I am today. In my early university years, I was obsessed with getting bigger and stronger and would always think about the next training program I would need to do, or the next style of training I should implement.
This constant striving started to really burn me out. I had nagging pains and injuries and no longer looked forward to my training. Then, one day during the pandemic, in my parents’ basement, I remember thinking to myself, “Goals are so arbitrary, they never end. After reaching a goal, I always ask myself ‘What’s next?’.” That day I had an epiphany: The journey is the destination!
With this new paradigm in mind, my training became much more enjoyable as I focused on the present moment, proper recovery, and injury prevention.
Today, I strive to serve others to the best of my ability, helping them to become stronger, get out of pain, and live their best lives. My mission is to help others discover their potential and show them just how truly powerful they can be, both physically and mentally.
